James Joseph Parsons&nbsp;was born on March 24, 1973 in Houston, Texas. He is&nbsp;known for his Golden Globe and Emmy Award-winning TV role as&nbsp;Sheldon Cooper on CBS's&nbsp;The Big Bang Theory.

He was raised in Spring, Texas, and attended Klein Oak High School. He earned a bachelor's degree from the University of Houston and&nbsp;enrolled in graduate school at the University of San Diego in 1999. Throughout his education, Parsons took a keen interest in theatre, appearing regularly in shows at the Stages Repertory Theater, becoming a founding member of&nbsp;Infernal Bridegroom Productions, and completing a two-year course in classical acting in partnership with the Old Globe Theatre. He moved to New York City after his graduation in 2001.

He made his Off-Broadway debut as&nbsp;Jeremiah in Manhattan Ensemble Theater's production of Franz Kafka's&nbsp;The Castle, which opened in January 2002. He went on to appear in two productions for La Jolla Playhouse in San Diego:&nbsp;as&nbsp;Valère in&nbsp;Molière's&nbsp;Tartuffe&nbsp;in 2002 and as&nbsp;Prince Tartaglia in&nbsp;The Love for Three Oranges&nbsp;in 2004. Parsons made his Broadway debut in the critically acclaimed Broadway premiere of&nbsp;The Normal Heart in April 2011, with his portrayal of&nbsp;Tommy Boatwright earning him a Theatre World Award. He and the cast also received a Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Ensemble Performance. He returned to Broadway in May 2012 to take on the lead role of&nbsp;Elwood P. Dowd&nbsp;in the Roundabout Theatre Company's revival of&nbsp;Harvey&nbsp;at <a href="https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/theatres/studio-54">Studio 54</a> and once again returned to the same venue in May 2015 to play God in the Broadway premiere of&nbsp;<a href="https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/reviews/an-act-of-god">An Act of God</a>.

From 2002 until 2006, Parsons appeared in small roles in several television series and films, including Ed,&nbsp;Garden State,&nbsp;School for Scoundrels,&nbsp;and as Rod Holbrook in&nbsp;Judging Amy. He got his big break after being cast as Sheldon Cooper in CBS's&nbsp;hit sitcom The Big Bang Theory.&nbsp;From&nbsp;2007 to 2019, he starred in a total of 279&nbsp;episodes, won a Golden Globe in 2011, received two further Golden Globe nominations in 2013 and 2014, won a total of four Emmy Awards in 2010, 2011, 2013, and 2014, and received two additional Emmy Award nominations in 2009 and 2012. Other notable screen credits over the years include his Emmy-nominated performance in the 2014 TV movie adaptation of The Normal Heart&nbsp;as well as roles in The Muppets,&nbsp;Elf: Buddy's Musical Christmas,&nbsp;DreamWorks Animation's Home,&nbsp;Hidden Figures,&nbsp;Young Sheldon, and Hollywood.

Parsons returned&nbsp;to Broadway to take on the role of Michael in the 50th anniversary production of&nbsp;The Boys in the Band&nbsp;from April 30 through August 11,&nbsp;2018. He starred in the Off-Broadway revival of A Man of No Importance in 2022 and returns to Broadway in 2024 in Paula Vogel's Mother Play.

The Booth Theatre opened on October 16, 1913, as an adjoining venue with the [Shubert Theatre](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/theatres/shubert-theatre). The building was designed by Henry B. Herts, and the first production there was Arnold Bennett's play *The Great Adventure*.

Named after the actor Edwin Booth, brother to the infamous John Wilkes Booth, the venue was actually the second New York theatre to bear his name. The first was built in 1869 on 23rd Street and Sixth Avenue, but it was demolished in 1965.

The facade and parts of the current Booth's interior have been designated New York City landmarks.

With audiences on three sides of a small, knickknack-laden stage, which actors frequently spill off of with instruments in hand, [*A Man of No Importance*](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/show/24233-a-man-of-no-importance-tickets) at [Classic Stage Company](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/theatres/classic-stage-company) perfectly captures the feel of scrappy community theatre in a church basement. That's a high compliment, to clarify. In fact, it's the entire point of the show, a stirring and gorgeous one in its simplicity.

The musical is set up as a play-within-a-play, with bus passengers in Dublin introducing the story of their conductor, Alfie Byrne ([Jim Parsons](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/stars-on-stage/jim-parsons)). They're all members of his amateur theatre troupe, save for the bus driver, Robbie (A. J. Shively), though Alfie hopes he'll join for more reasons than one. Alfie is gay; Robbie is not, but the next best thing to being with him, then, is convincing him to lead an Oscar Wilde play.

Wilde is, of course, a deliberate choice for the playwright that consumes Alfie's every waking moment. "Wilde had no life aside from art. Remember that. He lived in the realm of the aesthetic. He never descended into the sewer," Alfie says of his idol. He does the same thing, throwing himself into the theatre troupe to escape his desires, while secretly wishing the theatre will be his ticket to living his truth. (Alfie is urged on at points by Wilde's ghost, played by Thom Sesma, thoroughly enjoying himself.) It's a clever conceit, as *A Man of No Importance* is very aware of its own theatricality, and how performing Alfie's story shows acceptance in itself.

Parsons convincingly inhabits Alfie's earnestness and diffidence, if not his Irish accent. Alfie's intimate little story of self-discovery isn't quite big enough for all its characters, but each member of the ensemble shines in even the most underwritten parts. Shereen Ahmed is marvelous as the reticent leading lady Adele, and Mary Beth Peil's few lines as Mrs. Grace are some of the show's funniest. ("She's a little old [to play] me daughter, Mr. Byrne. Can she be me sister?" she asks of the decades-younger Adele.)

In stage time, Alfie is most evenly matched by his sister Lillian (a motherly, wisecracking Mare Winningham) who can't understand why he hasn't settled down. And Shively brings an effortless, mischievous charm to Robbie, lighting up the stage with "The Streets of Dublin," his energetic solo and the show's best number among a strong array of Irish folk tunes by Lynn Ahrens and Stephen Flaherty.

*A Man of No Importance* ultimately rushes to its end, but this being a 20-year-old musical whose writer (the late, great Terrence McNally) has passed, dwelling on that is fruitless. This revival — the first since its New York premiere in 2002 — has songs and performances that will rouse the soul, and that's of the utmost importance.

'A Man of No Importance' review — Jim Parsons leads a simple yet stirring revival

Founded in 1967, Classic Stage Company (also known as CSC) is located in the heart of Manhattan’s East Village close to Union Square. CSC produces revivals and reimaginings of classical plays and musicals for contemporary audiences, which often relate to current issues.

The company's first venue was a 100-seat theatre within Rutgers Presbyterian Church, and it moved to its current venue, a former carriage house, in 1973. The 199-seat theatre has a thrust stage with audiences seated on three sides of the performance space.

In January 2019, the Off-Broadway home of Classic Stage Company was renamed the Lynn F. Angelson Theater in honor of Lynn F. Angelson, a longstanding board chair.

The Hayes Theater officially opened as The Little Theatre on March 12, 1912. The building was designed by Harry Creighton Ingalls and built by Winthrop Ames, opening with John Galsworthy's play *The Pigeon*.

During the 1920s, the theatre was redesigned by Herbert J. Krapp to increase the capacity from 300 to 590. The New York Times purchased the building in 1931, converting it to a conference hall under the name of New York Times Hall.

In 1979, Martin Markinson and Donald Tick bought the theatre and renamed it in 1983 to the Helen Hayes Theatre to honor the actress. A previous theatre bearing her name was demolished in 1982 to make way for the Marriott Marquis Hotel.

On April 18, 2015, it was officially announced that Second Stage Theater had purchased the property. It was later revealed that the venue would be renamed the Hayes Theater, and it opened in spring 2018. The Hayes Theater is the smallest Broadway theatre, now with 597 seats.

The daughter of actress Lea Thompson and director Howard Deutch, Zoey Deutch is known for her onscreen roles in the TV show *The Politician* and the rom-com movie *Set It Up*, both on Netflix, alongside Richard Linklater's movie *Everybody Wants Some!!*

Deutch's accolades include a British Independent Film Award for Best Supporting Actress for the movie *The Outfit* and a Teen Choice Award nomination for the movie *Vampire Academy*.

The Ethel Barrymore Theatre was built in 1928 and designed by Herbert J. Krapp. It is the only surviving theatre that Lee and J.J. Shubert built for the purpose of staging productions starring an individual artist affiliated with them.

Ethel Barrymore achieved stardom under the management of producer Charles Frohman. The Shuberts offered to build her a theatre and commission a play for her to premiere in her namesake house. The play, *The Kingdom of God*  opened on December 20, 1928. Other plays she performed there include *The Love Duel*, *Scarlet Sister Mary*, *The School for Scandal*, and *An International Incident*.

Gene Feist and Elizabeth Owens founded Roundabout Theatre Company in 1965. With the support of the Steinbergs’ Charitable Trust, the Harold & Miriam Steinberg Center for Theatre opened to the public in March 2004. The theatre is Roundabout's Off-Broadway home. The inaugural production at the venue was Lynn Nottage’s *Intimate Apparel*, starring Viola Davis.

The complex’s main stage is the Laura Pels Theatre, named after the Roundabout board member who previously funded the company’s first Off-Broadway home at the Criterion Center. The space originally contained 350 seats. During renovation, a 74-seat mezzanine was added to accommodate more of the company’s subscribers.

The theatre is widely used to produce premieres and revivals by established artists. In 2005, Roundabout completed work on the 62-seat Black Box Theatre in the lowest level of the complex. Besides being used as a rehearsal space and for educational programmes, it is also home to the Roundabout Underground initiative, which produces new works by emerging playwrights.

Designed by Eero Saarinen with the collaboration of Jo Mielziner, the Vivian Beaumont Theater opened on October 21, 1965, with a revival of *Georg Büchner's Danton's Death* starring James Earl Jones and Stacy Keach.

The venue was named after heiress Vivian Beaumont Allen, who donated $3 million for its construction but died in 1962 before its completion. The theatre shares a building with the Off-Broadway venue the [Mitzi E. Newhouse Theater](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/theatres/lincoln-center-mitzi-e-newhouse-theater). Lincoln Center Theater has operated both since 1985. LCT's intimate [Clare Tow Theater](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/theatres/lincoln-center-claire-tow-theater), situated on the roof of the Vivian Beaumont, was added in 2012.

The Vivian Beaumont Theater is the only Broadway theatre not in the theatre district around Times Square. Located within Lincoln Center near 65th Street and 10th Avenue, it is the northernmost and westernmost Broadway house. The venue is also one of five Broadway theatres named for a woman.

The Samuel J. Friedman Theatre originally opened on December 7, 1925 as the Biltmore Theatre. Herbert J. Krapp designed the building for impresario Irwin Chanin. Its inaugural production was *Easy Come Easy Go*. 

From 1952 to 1962, CBS used the theatre for television and radio broadcasting purposes. In 1963, it reopened as a traditional theatre with Neil Simon's *Barefoot in the Park*.

In 1987, the theatre closed following an arson attack and sat vacant for 14 years. In 2001, Manhattan Theatre Club took over the venue and reopened the performance space in 2003 after renovations. MTC renamed it the Samuel J. Friedman Theatre on September 4, 2008, to honor the Broadway publicist.

Ephraim Manessah Sykes&nbsp;was born on July 17, 1985 in St. Petersburg, Florida.&nbsp;He is a Tony and Grammy Award-nominated stage actor&nbsp;who also starred as Seaweed J. Stubbs in NBC’s Hairspray Live!&nbsp;in 2016.

After attending Fordham University in New York City, Sykes made his Broadway debut in 2009, joining the cast of Disney’s The Little Mermaid. He then earned a spot later that year in the Broadway premiere of the Tony Award-winning Best Musical&nbsp;Memphis. Sykes made his Off-Broadway debut originating the role of Benny in the 2011 revival of Rent at New World Stages and later that year,&nbsp;he returned to Broadway as part of the original cast of Disney’s <a href="https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/reviews/newsies">Newsies</a>.&nbsp;He&nbsp;followed this turn up as an original cast member of the 2013 Broadway premiere of <a href="https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/reviews/motown-the-musical">Motown The Musical</a>.

In January 2015, Sykes returned off Broadway to <a href="https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/theatres/public-theater">The Public Theater</a>, originating the role of George Eacker in the musical juggernaut&nbsp;Hamilton. After receiving wide acclaim, the production transferred to Broadway from July 2015, eventually winning the 2016 Tony Award for Best Musical.&nbsp;Sykes remained with the production until September 2016.

His big break as a leading man came after being cast as David Ruffin in Ain’t Too Proud - The Life and Times of The Temptations.&nbsp;Following tryouts in Berkeley, Washington&nbsp;D.C., Los Angeles, and Toronto, the Broadway premiere opened at the <a href="https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/theatres/imperial-theatre">Imperial Theatre</a> in March 2019. Sykes earned his first Tony Award nomination for his efforts, followed by a Grammy Award nomination for Best Musical Theater Album&nbsp;in 2020.

On screen, Sykes is known for playing Seaweed J. Stubbs in NBC’s Hairspray Live!&nbsp;in 2016. He has also appeared in 30 Rock&nbsp;on NBC in 2011, Leave It on the Floor&nbsp;(2011), NBC’s Broadway-centric musical series Smash&nbsp;(2013), as Marvin in Vinyl&nbsp;on HBO (2016), Marvel’s Luke Cage&nbsp;on Netflix (2016), Amazon’s Crisis in Six Scenes&nbsp;(2016), and the movie Detroit&nbsp;(2017).&nbsp;

Sykes was originally cast as Michael Jackson in&nbsp;<a href="https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/show/mj-the-musical">MJ The Musical</a>, beginning Broadway performances in December 2021. However, he withdrew from the production due to scheduling conflicts.

When the curtain came up at the <a href="/theatres/imperial-theatre">Imperial Theatre</a>&nbsp;and as the stage directions say "Lights up on a stage exploding in lights and energy. Five men dressed in fly suits and hair slicked like bullets are center stage. They move as smooth as melted butter on a biscuit;" and then they began to sing the familiar words "You've got a smile so bright/You know you could have been a candle," all I could think was, wow, the vocals aren't very tight for a Broadway show.&nbsp;And then I realized, the audience was singing along.&nbsp;From the very first moment in <a href="/show/aint-too-proud-the-life-and-times-of-the-temptations">Ain't Too Proud - The Life and Times of The Temptations</a> it is impossible not to be completely engaged.Obviously, the music of The Temptations and the audience's identification with it has a lot to do with that immediate connection. Like certain smells are able to evoke strong memories, so too can music.&nbsp;And there's no doubt that The Temptations' music is the soundtrack to the lives of a wide swath of generations from Baby Boomers to Millennials.&nbsp;The group started in 1960 and continues to perform today.&nbsp;But Ain't Too Proud&nbsp;isn't just another jukebox musical.&nbsp;It's based on founding member Otis Williams' (Derrick Baskin) memoir "The Temptations," and in the musical he is the narrator.&nbsp;As the only one of the "classic five" Temptations alive today, it's only fitting he's the one to tell the story.And quite a story it is.&nbsp;Full of hard work and drama, personal conflict and social and political revolutions, the story of The Temptations, is also the story of the famed record label Motown.&nbsp;So, it is the story of R&amp;B music and it's rise on the American music scene.&nbsp;As exemplified by The Temptations, there is absolutely nothing more compelling than that tale.&nbsp;Noted playwright Dominique Morisseau, who is no stranger to writing about the world of music, has woven the narrative with the music brilliantly.&nbsp;And director Des McAnuff, who won both Tony and Olivier awards for his work on <a href="/show/jersey-boys">Jersey Boys</a> and who also helmed <a href="/show/summer-the-donna-summer-musical">Summer: The Donna Summer Musical</a>, keeps the excitement going at a steady clip.But the real star of the show is the music of The Temptations.&nbsp;And there are over 31 of their songs, and some other familiar tunes from the period, that are presented with stunning vocal arrangements by Kenny Seymour, and the fabulously talented voices of the cast of Ain't Too Proud. Designed by Herbert J. Krapp, the Imperial Theatre was built for the Shubert Organization and officially opened on December 25, 1923 with the musical *Mary Jane McKane*.

It was the Shuberts' 50th New York venue and was constructed as a replacement for their 20-year-old [Lyric Theatre](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/theatres/lyric-theatre) (which stood partly on the site of the current Lyric Theatre). The Imperial Theatre also held the first Ms. Globe Pageant in 1951.

The Imperial Theatre, located on the corner of 45th Street and Eighth Avenue, is closest to the 42nd Street - Port Authority Bus Terminal subway stop on the A, C, and E lines. The closest bus stops are 8th Ave/W 46th St. on the M20 and M104 lines and 8th Ave/W 43rd St. on the M20, M104, and M34A-SBS line.
