Jeremy Michael Jordan&nbsp;was born on November 20, 1984 in Corpus Christi, Texas, and is a Broadway favorite best known for his Tony-nominated performance as Jack Kelly in Disney's&nbsp;Newsies&nbsp;and for his TV roles as&nbsp;Jimmy Collins on NBC's Smash&nbsp;and as Winn Schott on The CW's Supergirl.

He attended the Mary Carroll High School in Texas, where he began acting and was an active member of the school's choir, and he would go&nbsp;on to graduate from Ithaca College in New York with a bachelor of fine arts in musical theatre. His first notable stage roles include Alex in&nbsp;The Little Dog Laughed&nbsp;at Hartford TheaterWorks and Tom Sawyer in&nbsp;Big River&nbsp;at Goodspeed Opera House, both in Connecticut in 2008. He would then make his Broadway debut in 2009 as a swing in the Broadway premiere of&nbsp;Rock of Ages,&nbsp;and in December of that year, he joined the Broadway cast of West Side Story&nbsp;as an alternate for the leading role of Tony, quickly proving his worth&nbsp;as a leading man. This was further established when he was cast as&nbsp;Clyde Barrow in the short-lived Broadway premiere of&nbsp;<a href="https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/reviews/bonnie-and-clyde">Bonnie and&nbsp;Clyde</a>&nbsp;in November&nbsp;2011, which nevertheless earned him a&nbsp;Theatre World Award in 2012.

Jordan shot to Broadway fame in his next outing, originating the role of Jack Kelly in Disney's&nbsp;<a href="https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/reviews/newsies">Newsies</a>. He had previously played the role at the world premiere production at the Paper Mill Playhouse in New Jersey in September&nbsp;2011, which transferred to Broadway's Nederlander Theatre in the spring of 2012. It was slated for an initial limited engagement, but Disney then extended it to an open-ended run due to popular demand. For his performance, Jordan earned his first Tony and Drama Desk Award nominations in 2012 and his first Grammy Award nomination (as a principal soloist in the Best Musical Theater Album&nbsp;category) in 2013. He later reprised the role for the Los Angeles&nbsp;performances, which were filmed live on stage and&nbsp;broadcast to cinemas worldwide in February 2017 as Disney's Newsies the Broadway Musical.&nbsp;In the fall of 2018, he made&nbsp;his debut in a Broadway play, taking on the role of&nbsp;Officer Paul Larkin in the Broadway premiere of&nbsp;American Son&nbsp;at the Booth Theatre from&nbsp;October 6, 2018 through January 27, 2019.

His other stage credits include the Encores! presentation of&nbsp;A Bed and A Chair&nbsp;at New York City Center in November 2013, the role of J.M. Barrie in the American premiere of&nbsp;Finding Neverland&nbsp;in Cambridge, Massachussetts from July to September 2014,&nbsp;the concert production of&nbsp;Parade&nbsp;at Lincoln Center in February 2015, and reprising the role of Tony in&nbsp;West Side Story&nbsp;at The Hollywood Bowl in June 2016.

Mr. Jordan's big television breakthrough came after being cast as Jimmy Collins in NBC's&nbsp;Broadway-centric musical series "Smash," appearing in a total of 17 episodes in 2013. On screen, he has also starred as Jamie Wellerstein opposite Anna Kendrick in the 2014 musical movie "The Last Five Years," and appeared in popular TV series such as "Elementary" and "Law &amp; Order: Special Victims Unit". In 2015, he would debut as&nbsp;Winslow "Winn" Schott, Jr. in DC Comics' hit series "Supergirl," which debuted on CBS before switching to The CW. The character has also appeared on DC's "The Flash" in 2017. Mr. Jordan also&nbsp;lends his voice to the character of Varian in "Rapunzel's Tangled Adventure" for the Disney Channel since 2017.

Mr. Jordan&nbsp;returned&nbsp;to Broadway, assuming the role of Dr. Pommater in the hit musical&nbsp;Waitress&nbsp;from April 8 to June 2, 2019 at the Brooks Atkinson Theatre. He then starred in the Off-Broadway revival of Little Shop of Horrors in 2021 and returned to the lead role of Seymour for a limited engagement in 2023.

Waitress is a musical that will leave you fahklempt, because of Sarah Bareilles' sublime music, but seriously unsatisfied with the decision to overstuff this story.There are a few basic and necessary ingredients in writing a story. On the one hand there is the three character rule. Two main characters, one of whom - the primary - is driving the piece (Romeo tumbles for Juliet), and a third character whose presence affects the plot. Romeo kills Mercutio and things go south. We see this all the time in every single show on TV. Every. Single. One. Then you have your actions: discover, deliberate and determine. Also in every TV script. These are basics that date back to a seriously long time ago. Way long. And they are basic because they work. They work so well that when you see a show that feels off you can go directly to these rules and see where the applecart tipped over.In this case I picture this esteemed tribe of artists sitting around the worktable and considering what to cut. I saw this show in Boston and it was ripe for scissoring back then. I picture the conversation went something like, "Well, we could cut the song about dating." And the reply, "Oh but I love that song. And she nails it." "OK. How about the one where she defends her love life." "Nope. We need that one because she's been silent up till then." And on and on and on. In the end everything stayed because all the elements were too dear. No one had the laser vision to make the cuts. Even the song "I Love You Like A Table" - the title speaks for itself...To use the pie analogy that begins the show, this team took sugar, butter, flour and added chocolate, cinnamon, lemons, ginger, molasses, minced meat and... you get the idea.On the plus side of everything is Jesse Mueller whose skill at delivering a whole universe in a song is astonishing. Her range is stratospheric and her heart is in every note. As Jenna, she is the waitress who supplies Joe's Diner with pies that are not just pies. Each one is life. "Deep Dish Blueberry Bacon" "Betrayed by My Eggs Pie". Some are real, others are fantasy, like "My Husband's A Jerk Chicken Pot Pie".Jenna is one of those women who never gets a leg up. The kind of woman who will not be able to afford a ticket to this show. She married because there was not much else to do. And now her husband has devolved into a self-pitying Neanderthal named Earl (Nick Cordero). At work Jenna is buoyed up by the other waitresses. Dawn (Kimiko Glenn) is a perky waif who would like to be in love but has no idea how to do it. Becky (Keala Settle) is a woman with a lot of mileage who still has plenty of tread on her tires. The cook Cal (Eric Anderson) is a monosyllabic soul of hidden substance. The owner Joe (a delightful as always Dakin Matthews) wears gruff like an impenetrable suit and misses nothing. His solo "Take It From An Old Man" left the audience moved so much we almost forgot to clap. Then there are the customers who dance and sing through life.In other words there is nothing new here. Except for the arrival of the local gynecologist Dr. Pomatter (Drew Gehling) to whose office Jenna bolts when she learns she is pregnant with a child she does not want because a) it is Earl's and b) she is pretty certain she will mess up being a mother. The highly improbable relationship that develops between doctor and patient is made plausible, once again, because of the music. Their several duets are exquisite, and when it comes to being funny, Gehling walks away with the trophy.Eventually Jenna gets her courage back, and the balcony erupts with applause. Not so much in the orchestra where I imagine there were a lot of women seeing themselves on that stage: in an unhappy relationship with future prospects looking dim. The walking wounded.And that is where the bravery of this show lies: in the tale of a woman who is living her life by putting one foot in front of the other every day. She has dreams. In this show a dream does not make you delusional. A dream is a soft place to land.And in the end that is why we cry and that is why we cheer. And that is why I will go to Tower Records (gotcha) and get the cast recording. The plant at the centre of <a href="/show/little-shop-of-horrors">Little Shop of Horrors</a> that feeds on human blood may have had its sights on world domination, but the musical that was based on the low-budget 1960 comedy sci-fi film of the same name has actually long achieved it, so it ultimately got what it wanted. And now the show has come full circle, 37 years on from its Off-Off-Broadway beginnings at the WPA Theatre (now no more) in May 1982, before moving to the larger Orpheum Theater on Second Avenue in the East Village that summer, where it ran for five years and became the highest-grossing show in Off-Broadway history until then, to find a new home at another Off-Broadway house just off Eighth Avenue in midtown Manhattan.In the intervening years, it has been turned into a feature film and played in the West End and on Broadway (the latter in a new production in 2003 that ran for less than a year at the Virginia Theatre, now the August Wilson), but its true home is a more modestly scaled place like the 270-seater <a href="/theatres/westside-theatre">Westside Theatre</a>, a former Baptist church built in 1889 that has been used as a theatre space since the mid-1970s.But while it is naturally a special pleasure and privilege to see the show at close quarters again, everything about this new version screams Broadway, from its above-the-title casting of multiple Tony Award nominees Jonathan Groff, Tammy Blanchard and two-time Tony winner <a href="/actor-profile/christian-borle">Christian Borle</a>, to its creative staff, led by director Michael Mayer, Tony winner for his original production of Spring Awakening. In trying to mine new colours for Audrey, the abused floral shop assistant who falls for her work colleague Seymour as he nurtures a new exotic plant that he names Audrey II after her, Tammy Blanchard channels her into a sultry Rita Heyworth-inspired character, with her songs slowed down into torch songs of despair. 'Somewhere that's Green' sounds less aspirational of a better life than a dread doubt of ever achieving it.Jonathan Groff seems similarly depressed and downtrodden as Seymour, while Christian Borle plays the dentist Orin and a range of other characters purely as bright, eager caricature.There are some compensating pleasures from the trio of street urchins Ronnette (Ari Groover), Crystal (Salome Smith) and Chiffon (Joy Woods), who are a kind of Greek chorus observing and commenting on the action in Alan Menken's wonderful pastiche score. It is here that the enduring pleasures of the show itself are most apparent.Nicholas Mahon's new puppet designs for the plant itself are impressive as it grows ever larger. She once again took up the role of Kim in the 2017 Broadway revival of&nbsp;<a href="https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/show/miss-saigon">Miss Saigon</a>, a performance which earned her a Tony Award nomination for&nbsp;Best Actress in a Leading Role in a Musical. She is one of the youngest people to be nominated for award. Currently, she stars as Eurydice in Hadestown, an adaptation of the Orpheus and Eurydice myth that garnered eight Tony Awards out of 14 nominations at the 2019 ceremony. One of those nominations was for Noblezada, again in the&nbsp;Best Actress category, making her a two-time Tony nominee by age 23.

Aside from her theatrical work, she also starred as Rose in the 2020 film&nbsp;Yellow Rose. Her co-star Lea Salonga originated the role of Kim in&nbsp;Miss Saigon&nbsp;that Noblezada would later take on.

Going to hell has never been as much fun as seeing a performance of Anaïs Mitchell's musical <a href="/show/hadestown">Hadestown</a>, now playing at the <a href="/theatres/walter-kerr-theatre">Walter Kerr Theatre</a>.&nbsp;And don't let its origins in Greek mythology scare you off because there's a built-in narrator in the form of the god Hermes (André De Shields) whose job was to guide souls into the afterlife.&nbsp;In Hadestown, his first task is to introduce all the characters in a rollicking number "Road to Hell."Mitchell, the talented singer/songwriter who is responsible for the whole shebang, music, lyrics and book, has intertwined the myth of Orpheus (Reeve Carney), son of the God Apollo and muse Calliope and Eurydice (Eva Noblezada), wood nymph; with that of Hades (Patrick Page), god of the underworld and Persephone (Amber Gray), daughter of the god Zeus and goddess of the harvest Demeter.&nbsp;The story that unfolds in Hadestown is that Hades falls in lust with Persephone and abducts her to the underworld where they fall in love and marry.&nbsp;Demeter is so distraught she declares that there will be no more growth or harvest until Persephone returns.&nbsp;Zeus brokers a deal whereby Persephone spends 6 months out of the year above ground and 6 months out of the year below, thus creating the seasons. So, Persephone rides a train back and forth between the underworld known as Hadestown where she's the only living soul, and the world above.&nbsp;But Hades keeps shortening her time up above because he misses her.&nbsp;And the earth gets colder.Meanwhile, Orpheus is trying to write a song that will restore order to the seasons when he runs across Eurydice, with a little help from Hermes and The Fates (Jewelle Blackman, Yvette Gonzalez-Nacer, Kay Trinidad), who is wandering around cold and hungry.&nbsp;She's initially unimpressed until he starts singing.&nbsp;In the only off note in the production, they fall in love (unfortunately no chemistry between the two - Reeve Carney is a little too much of a hesitant milquetoast to be a believable love interest for the determined and charming Eva Noblezada) and marry.&nbsp;Whereupon Orpheus immediately goes back to songwriting and neglects Eurydice.So, what's a poor, once again cold and hungry girl to do?&nbsp;Where does she go to get warm?&nbsp;You guessed it, Hadestown.&nbsp;Where Eurydice becomes one of the poor lost souls in the underworld, trapped behind the wall Hades has erected. And explains in the Act One finale "Why We Build The Wall" that brings down the house.&nbsp;If I didn't know that Mitchell wrote the score in 2010, I'd swear she wrote it within the last two years.I won't spoil the second act except to say that it's about Orpheus' trip to Hadestown to find Eurydice to try to rescue her.&nbsp;And that Michael Krass' costumes for the Chorus in the underworld are outstanding, as is the visually stunning dance number choreographed by David Neumann done with headlamps and swinging lights.&nbsp;And if the love story between Orpheus and Eurydice didn't smolder, Patrick Page and Amber Gray set the house on fire as Orpheus and Persephone. The Broadway Theatre is one of only five playhouses situated directly on the street named Broadway. Designed by Eugene De Rosa, the building officially opened on December 25, 1924, as B. S. Moss’s Colony, a premier film house. The building underwent a series of name changes, including to Universal's Colony Theatre, B.S. Moss' Broadway Theatre, and Earl Carroll's Broadway Theatre.
